The milkweed pods are starting to be ready to pick. We talked about using them for wind checkers on episode 9. Wait till the pods are turning brownish gray or are starting to split open and please make sure you are leaving the seeds in the field! The monarch butterflies are in trouble and rely heavily on this plant, we need more milkweed, not less!
Quick tip for some new hunters out their...I'm no expert by any means but am constantly learning. The weather app said W wind today shifting to SW just before sunset. And thats exactly what it was at the jeep before I started my hike today to my spot. But I learned from many mistakes thats not always the case. The spot I hunted tonight was off a ridge in a creek bottom at a crossing onto another ridge with a cornfield on the other side. My wind was E all night because of the water current. If I hunt the ridges my wind swirls. I have learned in this spot the wind always goes with the current when I hunt close to the creek. So if I hunt at the bottom my wind is steady but never what the weather app says. So dont always go off your weather app. Check your wind often and learn as much as you can... #ohio#ohiobowhunting#mossyoak#publiclandowner#publicland#underarmour#primos#mathews#mathewsarchery#playthewind
It was too late for me to get to my stand, so I just tucked into the edge of a corn field. Within the next 30 minutes I had 12 does and 3 mature bucks pass within 50 yards of me. I’m holding my bow, trying to get a glove off so I can access my phone and zoom in all while trying to remain undetected. I’ll remember this night for years even though I never drew back. #bowhuntingwhitetails#playthewind#bluffcountry
Apparently my tree stand fools deer, but not bears... their noses are incredible! Whether you are spotting and stalking or ambushing from trees and ground blinds, ALWAYS pay attention to the wind. It will help you get closer and also help you to anticipate how and where an animal will move so you can better set up the shot. 🎯 #thehuntschool#playthewind#huntingtips#blackbear
Who else is ready to put the @wyndscent.official units back to work? I plan on using mine all summer long. I’ll be running the citronella scent to keep all the unwanted bugs away. #wyndwithbenefits#playthewind https://www.wyndscent.com/
It’s another #testimonialthursday ! Today’s testimonial comes from Shane Copenhaver @scope990.
Before getting to Shane’s testimonial, a quick reminder to enter our contest from yesterday if you haven’t already! Details are here on Instagram. Also, if you are interested in joining the University of Elk Hunting Online Course, remember to use the promo code Instagram to save 10%!
“When I bought the University of Elk Hunting ONLINE COURSE, I was looking for anything that might give me an edge in a high-pressure, Over-the Counter (OTC) public land hunt. I am not new to elk hunting, but I found an immense amount of great information in the Course. The one thing that kept getting my attention, however, was how often you check the wind.
In the past, I have always checked the wind on a regular basis. But after completing the Course, I had my wind checker in my hand as much as my bow! As usual, I made mistakes this season, but I was only busted once when a bull winded me - and that was because he wasn't the one we were calling to and he came in fast and without bugling!
Checking the wind every couple of minutes throughout every phase of the hunt really paid off. This bull had no idea I was there until he was 8 yards away…and it was too late!
Thank you, and keep all the great elk hunting tips coming!”
Thank you for the testimonial Shane and congrats on an awesome trophy!
So today's #growthesport moment was showing some of the 2nd and 3rd grade boys my new collection of @arsenaldiscsdg plastic, knowing the art and names would appeal to them. They wanted to throw them outside. That's how you pique their interest.
How do you hook them? You then uncork a 443 foot rip with the "air strike". A few of them ran to their friends to tell them "YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS!" ...yes the 30 mph winds helped a ton, but as far as they were concerned their teacher just broke some sort of distance record.
Needless to say, a few of these boys and girls are now interested in the sport, and want me to talk to their parents about the @kidsdiscgolf event I'm running at @daceydg this June!
You have got to play the wind, as Bowhunters our encounters can be limited but with the Wyndscent Grenade we are able to adjust ourselves to the best stand placement on the property due to just checking the wind!
As students of whitetail hunting we are always thirsty for attaining an upperhand on the elusive mature whitetail. For anyone who has not checked out Precision Bowhunting by John & Chris Eberhart, it's certainly worth the read. John and Chris have years of priceless #bowhunting knowledge from highly pressured to low pressured areas, breaking down each month tactically. The Eberhart's have been role models of mine since a young age, when team member @chad.phillips16 informed me of this enriching book. Give it a read! #bowhunting#ambushsaddle#scentlok#playthewind#deer
Pinned down by cows with the wind in my face. 30 yards and just waiting for the bull to come around the rock point like the cows did. Camera rolling. @solohntr @sitkagear @bendableproducts @huntbackcountry
