THOMAS "The Motor City Cobra" HEARNS
Thomas Hearns was born on October 18, 1958 in Memphis, USA. As a child, he moved to Detroit & began boxing at age 10 under trainer Emanuel Steward. Hearns compiled a 155-8 amateur record & was named 1977’s Most Outstanding National Amateur. He turned pro that year & racked up 17 straight KO victories. In 1980, Hearns knocked out WBA welterweight king Pipino Cuevas to claim his 1st world title & was voted the Ring Magazine "Fighter of the Year". Following 3 defenses he met WBC champion Sugar Ray Leonard in a unification bout & was stopped in a 14 round classic, voted the 1981 Ring Magazine "Fight of the Year". He rebounded to win the WBC Lt middleweight title with a MD over Wilfred Benitez in 1982. 1984 saw his finest hour, the 2 round destruction of the legendary Roberto Duran, in which he became the first boxer to KO Duran, earning him his 2nd Ring Magazine "Fighter of the Year" award. He then met Marvin Hagler for the undisputed middleweight title. In 1 of boxing’s all-time exciting fights, Tommy was stopped in 3 rounds, despite having Hagler hurt & badly cut, the fight was voted 1985 Ring Magazine "Fight of the Year". In 1987 he won his 3rd division title, the WBC light heavyweight strap. Later that year, "The Hitman" became the 1st man to win titles in 4 divisions by gaining the WBC middleweight belt. He became a 5 weight champion in 1988, winning the WBO super middleweight title. The following year Hearns had a chance to unify when he rematched his greatest foe, WBC champion Ray Leonard. This was Hearns's 6th Superfight, he floored Leonard in the 3rd & 11th rounds. However, the judges scored it a controversial draw. He claimed the WBA light heavyweight & IBO crusierweight titles before finally retiring for good in 2006. He was inducted into the International boxing hall of fame in 2012 in his 1st year of eligibility. With a sharp left jab & vicious right hand, he is widely considered the greatest light middleweight of all time. A 2-time ring "Fighter of the Year" he is ranked number 18 on The Ring's list of 100 greatest punchers of all time, this despite competing in 6 weight classes.
