SPECIAL POST - GRAND DUCHESS OLGA NIKOLAEVNA BIRTHDAY
On this day 123 years ago Tsar Nicholas first daughter Olga was born. The imperial couples first child, Olga Nikolaevna was born on 3 November 1895 in the Anichkov Palace. A 101 gun salute fired from the Peter and Paul Fortress and church bells ringed throughout Holy Russia. On that day Nicholas wrote in his diary “A day I will remember forever.” Olga was a robust child weighing 10 pounds. Her birth was a joyous one but it also came as a disappointment as many had hoped for a boy, as only a male could inherit the throne in accordance with the Pauline Laws. But whereas a boy would be the son of Russia, a daughter would be more one of the family and in that regard future children would make the family all the more closer. Queen Victoria, Olga’s godmother promptly dispatched a nanny to ensure her upbringing would be as fruitful as possible. From her earliest years Olga had a compassionate heart and desire to help others, but she was also known for her temper and moodiness; traits that would follow her throughout her life.
